Moved to the country and am now on well water. Not wanting to risk raw water (although the well tested merely high in Mn and moderately hard), I installed both a Kinetico dual-tank water softener, as well as the K5 drinking system.

Let me start with the good. Going on five years now. No issues. The system works great. No more Manganese staining, water is soft, and a recent water test confirmed the osmosis filter is still great. Let me be quite clear that this is an EXCELLENT product.

Now the pathetic...

After paying multiple THOUSANDS for this system, they now have you enslaved to their product and rules.

Want a check up? FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS (luckily not needed. again, great product)

Want a new filter for your K5 system each and every year (necessary to protect the osmosis membrane)? 80 DOLLARS.....

BUT WAIT.... THERES MORE.....

YOU HAVE TO BUY TWO!!!! 160 DOLLARS!!!!!!

Yes, in order to get a new fine-sediment filter to protect the reverse osmosis membrane, you need to ALSO buy the "taste" cartridge as well. Both are 80 dollars.

What does the "taste" cartridge do? Actually, it CONTAMINATES your 100% pure water with carbon, which for evolutionary reasons, humans enjoy the taste of that.

Do you NEED it? No. Does it HELP? No. But you better believe you're going to buy it. Because they wont sell you the NEEDED filter to protect your system unless you buy the useless filter to improve the taste. No one was buying the *** thing, so now they FORCE you to buy it.

So prepare to pay enough money EVERY YEAR that you could instead use to buy a Home Depot reverse osmosis filter system. Would it be as perfect as Kinetico? Doubt it. But heck, you could trash it every year and buy a brand new one for what you pay for YEARLY parts from Kinetico, and thats not counting the THOUSANDS spent on the original product.

Yup. They're the only one that sells the replacement parts. No other supplier. You buy from them..... or you let your system be destroyed.

Highway robbery, baby. These people have no shame.

GREAT product. Disgusting people. Abusive price.

Reason of review: Pricing issue.

Filters in ANY RO system are consumable, meaning they must be replaced periodically. I have a Culligan system and must get the filters replaced about every 4 years, on average.

I live alone, so don't use as much water as a larger household. In any event, it's unreasonable not to expect to have to change the filters when they've served their function for as long as they're designed to.

Most people spend thousands on a car and must use a specific filter and have it changed routinely to expect good performance from their vehicle. Maybe you didn't understand what you were buying and how it worked.
